Two local facts drive every slab we pour. First, the ground is split. Up on the ridges - Kettering, Beavercreek, Centerville - it's clay till that holds water, heaves in a freeze, and shrinks in a dry August. Down in the river valleys it's sand-and-gravel outwash that drains and bears well. We check what we're actually building on, because a base designed for one is wrong for the other.
Second, the frost line at 32 inches. A shed pad can float on grade and shift a hair with the seasons, since the shed doesn't care. A slab carrying a garage or an addition needs footings bearing below that line, because frost under a shallow footing lifts the building itself. That difference is exactly where vague bids blur the line.
